These housing cooperatives are nonprofit organizations where members collectively own and manage the housing. Members pay an affordable monthly housing charge, which covers operating expenses and reserves for future maintenance. 

• Member      Governance: Members actively participate in decision-making, including      electing a board of directors, approving budgets, and setting housing      policies.
• Affordability:      These cooperatives often provide housing at rates lower than market rent,      with a portion of units subsidized for low-income members through      government programs.
• Self-Management:      The community operates as a collective, managing daily operations and      addressing member concerns.

• Federal      Oversight: Originally, these cooperatives were established under      programs like Section 61 of the National Housing Act or CMHC (Canada      Mortgage and Housing Corporation) initiatives. Although administration has      been devolved in many cases, some co-ops remain under federal      jurisdiction.
• Mixed      Income: These co-ops often house people from various income levels,      fostering diverse communities.
